Every fast food joint at the top of the fast food ladder was built on a signature sandwich. McDonald’s has the Big Mac, Burger King has the Whopper, Wendy’s features Dave’s Single and at Arby’s it’s about the Roast Beef. Those restaurant icons found a sandwich people loved and crafted their menus and marketing around them.
What is Spangle’s known for? What is their signature sandwich? What are they marketing?
An Oriental Chicken Salad?
Huh?
That’s not a signature dish let alone a sandwich and I’ll bet it’s not getting people in the door or at the drive through window.
Sure, it’s not exactly apples to apples in comparing national fast food chains to a regional one, but then again, those national chains were regional at one time too. And to be fair, Spangle’s is announcing a new menu item, not trying to make a salad the signature item on their menu, but then again Spangles is a fast food joint, a BURGER joint. Why do they not have a signature sandwich?
I’m not sure ownership gets it. Look at their menu, it’s all over the place and promoting a salad rather than creating and promoting a signature sandwich is going to keep Spangles regional. They’re making the same mistake Hardees did in the 1990’s when they put all kinds of new items on the menu. They cranked out a variety of OK food, but flooding the menu with mediocrity put the company into trouble. Hardees lost focus on its signature burger – The Big Deluxe – and lost business as a result.
Hey Spangles, get back to the fundamentals of fast food, if you’re not going to promote the Gourmet Supreme, then create a new signature sandwich and market that instead of salad……
