Bachelor on the Cheap
Spangles got its start in Wichita back in 1978 under the name Coney Island. The number of Coney Island restaurants grew, but in 1984, the Steven brothers, owners of Coney Island determined the name was too restrictive and could not be franchised. The company then launched a city-wide naming contest and the winner was Spangles.
With a tagline of “Spangles, it just tastes better!” the restaurant menu features hamburgers made with Black Angus beef, flatbread pita wraps, salads, breakfast items and soft serve desserts.
Below is a list of Spangles Archives, reviews of their promotional, limited time and regular menu items. Included in many of the reviews, are assessments of restaurant service, i.e., how long it took from time to order to receiving your food, how polite the staff was, etc.
How was your last Spangles experience?

Spangles Gourmet Supreme (bacon add): 1/3 lb. Gourmet Supreme Steakburger w/ Cheese. Two Premium Black Angus Steakburger patties, mustard, ketchup, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, American cheese served on a butter toasted gourmet bun. Read On…

But on this day I decided to change things up a bit, ordering the Breakfast Club on Pita, which Spangles has been hyping up in commercials lately.
Here’s the description on the webite: Breakfast Club on Pita – Eggs, ham, bacon, American cheese, served on butter-toasted pita bread. Available all day! Sandwich Only: $3.99. Read On…

Their ‘signature’ burger is the Gourmet Supreme. I’m no stranger to this burger and in fact I’ve called Spangles out on not promoting this burger more aggressively. Not doing so holds the Spangles chain back in my humble opinion, because this particular burger can go toe-to-toe with the national chains, I’d put it up against the Big Mac, the Whopper and Dave’s (Wendy’s) single. Read On…

Intrigued by the use of Sourdough bread, I’ve been wanting to try this sandwich offering from Spangles, I love Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches and I wanted to see how the Spangle’s version stacks up to the classic and iconic East Coast sandwich.
There is no description of the Philly on the Spangles website, which is a HUGE missed opportunity by the Kansas based restaurant. Read On…

I love sandwiches made with sourdough bread, when toasted golden, brown and delicious it’s that perfect combination of a buttery, crispy crunch on the outside and a light, ‘pillowy’ bite on the inside. The cook at Spangles screwed this up. Read On…

Signature dishes, it’s food that embodies a region, it’s a celebration of iconic cultural flavors, where natives and tourists alike embrace that bowl, that plate, that sandwich, that finger food and say, “You HAVE to try this!”….
Examples of iconic signature dishes includes the Rueben sandwich in New York; crab cakes in Baltimore; The Philly Cheese Steak in Philadelphia; Fried Chicken in Atlanta; Deep dish pizza in Chicago; Bratwurst in Milwaukee; Gumbo in New Orleans and Cedar plank Salmon in Seattle.
So with all that iconic food in mind, does Wichita have a signature dish, or is the Mid-Continent City a melting pot of foods and flavors? Read On…

Regular readers know that I’ve been critical of Wichita based Spangles for not having a signature sandwich, for wasting marketing dollars in promoting a salad instead of promoting what could really elevate them to the next level. Spangles remains a small regional (within the state of Kansas) restaurant and not a nationally recognized restaurant because they don’t have a signature sandwich. Well, they have one, they just don’t promote it like they should. Read On…
