Recommended by Vicki S for a Thursday night dinner, I arrived at Las Catrinas Mexican Restaurant just before 6pm looking forward to a margarita at the conclusion of a long work day. A salt-rimmed cocktail on the rocks was also the perfect thing to temporarily dismiss yet ANOTHER three-digit degree ‘heat-fest’ day in the ICT.
Greeted warmly by the hostess when I walked in I was seated immediately. Wearing a smile, my waitress quickly introduced herself, took my margarita order (as well as a need for a glass of water) and went off to retrieve those as I perused the menu.

Complimentary Chips & Salsa
Las Catrinas has a very nice variety on their menu to include all the classic Tex-Mex and Mexican fare options in tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas and then some. What sets Las Catrinas apart from other Tex-Mex places though, are some of their appetizers and specialty dishes. One of their appetizers for example is bacon wrapped shrimp, stuffed with cheese and a fresh slice of jalapeno all topped with a mango/habanero glaze. They do burgers, to include a Shrimp Burger – seasoned shrimp mixed with caramelized onion, bell peppers, melted monterey cheese. lettuce, tomato and a pineapple wedge. And I’m told the House Specialty La Catrina is excellent, which is grilled chicken breast marinated with garlic butter and mushrooms, topped with two of those bacon wrapped shrimp I mentioned earlier and a guajillo cream sauce. All that goodness is plated with cilantro rice and charro beans.

EXCELLENT fish tacos!
Tempted as I was to order so many things, I went with the fish tacos. I’m a sucker for fish tacos and in my humble opinion if a Mexican restaurant can’t make a decent fish taco, then the rest of their fare is probably less-than-stellar as well.
Las Catrinas Fish Tacos ROCK! Wrapped in two, soft, warm flour tortillas was grilled mahi, cabbage, del mar dressing, queso fresco and sliced avocado. The tacos were plated with cilantro rice and black beans. The plate was hot to the touch (kudos to the waitress and the heads up!) and visually appealing, a nice presentation. In taking that first bite, I got that grilled mahi right off the bat, it was cooked perfectly, tender, umami. The cabbage delivered a nice texture element with a light crunch, there was the creaminess of the avocado, the light tangy essence of the crumbled queso fresco was delightful and bringing it all together was that del mar dressing. OUTSTANDING fish tacos! And not to slight the sides, Las Catrinas does a bang up job with their cilantro rice, it’s spot on and the black beans were tender and seasoned well. The whole plate was fantastic.
Every aspect of the dining experience was excellent, the margaritas were refreshing, the complimentary chips were warm and perfectly salted and the salsa they serve is better than most. The service was top notch. The waitress was friendly and attentive, the food was delivered quickly and without issue, the portions were generous. I could have stopped after eating just one taco, but 1., it was too good and 2., a leftover, re-heated taco just flat out isn’t as tasty.
I paid $27.10 + tip for a few drinks, some great tacos and fantastic sides. I’m giving Las Catrinas 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars, great food, great service, very reasonable prices and kudos to Vicki S for the great recommendation. I’ll be visiting Las Catrinas again real soon and to sample the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer along with that La Catrina dish! If you haven’t checked this restaurant out yet, it’s most definitely worth a visit. It’s now a go-to Mexican restaurant for me.
