Being a Wichita foodie isn’t just about knowing where the best restaurants are in the Wichita metro, it’s also about knowing where to get the best ingredients so you can make great eats at home, to include copycat dishes!
Here’s this week’s side-by-side comparison of grocery store prices for Aldi, Dillon’s and Walmart, covering the basics.
This week’s list, dated January 9, 2023, added two items to the list, flour and onions, for a new total of 21 essential items.
Last week’s list dated January 2, 2023 contained 19 essential items and it’s interesting to note that overall, prices are up slightly from that week at all three stores. For those same 19 items, Aldi’s total was up a whopping $4.91 with eggs, lunch meat and milk providing the bulk of that increase. Dillon’s total went up $0.90 and Walmart went up $0.72 respectively.
Remember that items featured will be the store brand for each respective store, unless otherwise labeled. Prices are good as of the writing and could change by the time you make that grocery run.
Takeaways from this week’s price review:
- Walmart was the cheapest place to shop this week, ending Aldi’s streak of three weeks for lowest overall price.
- Dillon’s continues to be the most expensive place to grocery shop on a week-to-week basis. You can lower that price by using their loyalty card and digital coupons, but not everybody does that and that’s not the purpose of this review. This is a straight price comparison for basic essentials. Remember that Kroger (Dillon’s) does the loyalty card and promos for a reason. You’re being marketed. The “deals” are designed to get you to spend MORE. Sure, a particular item may be a great deal, but what Dillon’s is counting on is you putting more items in your cart.
- Walmart is again the only store of the three that is charging dramatically different prices for varying lunchmeats, especially turkey, notably higher in price. Their prices are all over the map as they transition from 9 ounce containers (what was a standard size for all three stores) to 7 ounces, another form of a price hike, paying about the same amount but getting less.
