Saving money at the grocery store is a big deal. So is cleanliness, product quality, item availability, that attitude of the staff and checkout speed.
Reader’s Digest recently ranked grocery stores with all the above and more in determining what stores provided shoppers the best value.
Here’s how stores in the Wichita Metro fared:
15. Kroger
Known as Dillon’s in our neck of the woods, Kroger and its branches won a spot on the Reader’s Digest list through its strength in local outreach, diversity, environmental and social policies. In addition, Kroger has been recognized as a top retailer in 2022 by Statista (a market data research outfit) and Newsweek. The company is also known for its loyalty/promotions/rewards programs.
14. Walmart Neighborhood Market
According to Reader’s Digest, Walmart and their 1998 spin-off Walmart Neighborhood Markets accounted for more than 25% of all grocery revenue in the United States, racking up $467 billion in grocery sales. One-stop convenience was also cited for value.
12. Whole Foods
Known for it’s organic and healthy options, credit the Amazon acquisition of the company in 2017 and the dramatic price drops since then as the primary reason Whole Foods made this list. Likewise, the company was recognized by Statista as one of America’s Best Retailers in 2022.
11. Sam’s Club
Owned by Walmart, this warehouse club has been recognized by Dunnhumby (a customer data science and analytics firm) as an overall best grocery retailer (8th best) as well as one the top grocery stores ranked by price (11th best).
10. Costco
The nation’s largest warehouse club earned plenty of market data accolades in 2022 to include a spot on Statista’s list of America’s Best Retailers and two spots on Dunnhumby’s grocery stores list as an overall best grocery retailer (9th best) as well as one the top grocery stores ranked by price (6th best).
4. Aldi
Regular readers know that I’m an Aldi fan and I’ve helped grocery shoppers become Aldi fans with my competitor cost comparisons, product reviews and weekly price listings. Reader’s Digest reinforces and validates what I’ve been telling people for quite a few years now. You’ll save money at Aldi vs. shopping at the mainstream grocery store.
2. Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s is a cool store and the ranking doesn’t surprise me, because it has Aldi blood. Just so there’s no confusion, Aldi and Trader Joe’s are NOT owned by the same parent company. To make a long story short, the original Aldi store hails from Germany. Growing into a large grocery chain, the company was run by the original owner’s two sons, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. They apparently had an argument over whether to sell cigarettes in their stores. The result was splitting things up into two independent companies and what we know today in the U.S. as Trader Joe’s, owned by Aldi Nord, and Aldi, owned by Aldi Süd. Here’s an impressive factoid about Trader Joe’s, which I didn’t know until I read the Reader’s Digest list, the blurb reads: Its prices are the same at every store in the country, whether you’re shopping in New York City or Kansas.
So there you have it, area stores named to the Reader’s Digest 15 Best Grocery Stores in America List.
