Smart Way is a Kroger budget brand

By Mike Thayer

The hamburger bun, no burger is truly complete without one!  A good burger bun is soft and ‘pillowy,’ yet can hold up to a juicy burger patty.  There are all kinds of burger bun options out there these days, plain white bread hamburger buns; wheat buns; buns topped with sesame seeds; brioche, potato, pretzel and more.

Today, I’m reviewing Smart Way Enriched Hamburger Buns.

Kroger (a.k.a. Dillon’s in my neck of the woods) recently released their new budget brand, called Smart Way, putting approximately 150 products on the shelves.  Touted as an inflation fighter, shoppers can opt for budget-minded product options such as cookies, pizza, vegetables, sugar, napkins, household cleaners and much more.

So how good are these budget hamburger buns?

I sampled the buns a few different ways, eating a bun fresh in framing bologna, cheese, mustard and lettuce for a quick sandwich; consuming a bun that was garlic butter toasted for a loose meat sandwich; and of course a grilled bun in a classic cheeseburger preparation.

The buns were adequate in all preparations, but they don’t really bring any flavor to the party.  It’s a sub-par bun in the flavor department even for just being plain white buns.  They’re not the softest, most ‘pillowy’ bun available either, lacking a slightly sweet, pleasurable chew.  And while they didn’t disintegrate halfway through eating a juicy burger like some bargain brands do, they’re on the dry side, resulting in a very, “eh” bun.

Costing me $1.09 for a classic 8 count bag, I’m giving Smart Way Enriched Hamburger Buns 3 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  It’s a very basic, plain bun, there’s nothing spectacular about it, it is a budget buy after all.  But that’s the problem, there’s no YUM factor.  The price is very reasonable however, making it a borderline repeat buy.  They’ll do in a pinch, garlic butter toasting is recommended.
