Green beans, they are a vegetable staple for many American households, whether fresh, frozen, or canned.
On a personal note, green beans are near the top of my list of favorite veggies, they’re a great tasting side dish that’s low in calories and packs a lot of nutritional value in containing many essential vitamins and minerals. I enjoy them prepared simply with a little salt, pepper and butter. They’re great in a stir fry, excellent in soups, tasty in summer salads and then there’s that holiday classic, green bean casserole.
In stocking up on some veggies when shopping at Aldi recently, I picked up a bag of Simply Nature Organic Cut Green Beans. I don’t have a preference for organic products, but I do like veggies that are packaged in steam bags and the price was reasonable.
Simply Nature is the organic brand featured at Aldi. They have a full line of organic, Non-GMO products to include dairy & eggs, fresh produce, frozen foods, fresh meat & seafood, snacks, pantry essentials and more. I’ve enjoyed some Simply Nature products in the past, another reason for putting the green beans in my cart, I knew I was picking up quality.
Easy peasy steam bag preparation, then seasoned with a bit of salt, pepper and butter.
Veggies in steam bags are really gaining in popularity, the convenience surpasses canned good preparation. It’s easy peasy cooking, all you have to do is literally take the bag out of the freezer and throw it in the microwave per the package instructions. In 4-5 minutes you’ve got steamy hot green beans ready to eat and you didn’t have to dirty up a single dish to do it!
You can of course prepare the green beans on the stove top or in the oven, but I did the microwave method on this occasion. The beans were cooked thoroughly, no hot or cold spots and they maintained a nice, bright green color. Serving them in a Ramekin, I hit them with a bit of butter, salt and pepper. There’s another benefit to preparing and serving the green beans in this manner, you can personalize the seasoning. I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, my Mom would cook canned green beans on the stove top dumping the beans, liquid and all in the sauce pan with some salt and bring them up to a boil. They had no flavor as a result, you had to put a boatload butter, MORE salt and pepper on them to make them palatable (no wonder so many kids hated veggies back in the day with that typical preparation!).
Not so with steam bags! The green beans retain so much of their freshness and flavor courtesy of flash freezing and steam bags. Cooked through but not to the point of becoming mush, these beans provide full green bean flavor and I didn’t have to add near as much butter, salt and pepper as I had to eating Mom’s canned green beans back in the day.
Costing me $1.55 for a 10 ounce bag, I’m giving Simply Nature Organic Cut Green Beans 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Reasonably priced, convenient as heck and tasty, they are definitely worthy of a repeat buy. In a price comparison, you’ll pay $2.50 or more for a 10 ounce bag of Green Giant Simply Steam Cut Green Beans at the mainstream grocery store, and those aren’t organic! Kroger’s organic store brand, Simple Truth, will cost you $2.29 for a 12 ounce bag.
