I love pizza rolls. I do have one problem with them though… They’re so TINY!
I was craving pizza rolls recently – pepperoni & mushroom – but I wanted them egg roll size. You can’t get large pizza rolls at the grocery store, nobody makes them and don’t bring up Hot Pockets, those aren’t egg rolls and besides, they suck.
I’ve been wanting to do scratch made egg roll sized pizza rolls for quite some time so off to the neighborhood Asian market I went.
WAY better than Totino’s Pizza Rolls!
Lucky Market is a great store, they have everything Asian you can think of, every cuisine. Located at 7100 E Harry St, Wichita, KS 67207, they’ve got it all covered from the basics in large varieties of noodles, rice, sauces (soy, teriyaki, hoisin etc.), to ginger beer, specialty meats, a huge selection of fish and a produce section offering all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Every isle of the store is filled with all kinds of great choices.
Staying focused on my egg roll wrapper mission (it’s easy to get distracted in Lucky Market and all the goodies), I picked up a package of Dynasty Egg Roll/Spring Roll Wrappers. Found in the freezer section, these things thaw quickly and they keep well in the refrigerator after opening the package.
In making my egg roll sized pizza rolls, I had enough pizza ingredients to make four rolls. Putting down some sauce, pepperoni, sliced mushrooms and mozzarella cheese, the wrappers sealed nicely with water on the edges and a proper tuck. The last thing I wanted was leakage during the fry! Frying up nicely and dusted with Parmesan cheese after taking the rolls out of the oil, these things provided a fantastic egg roll wrapper crunch, just what I was looking for in making a REAL pizza roll. I only made four rolls in this trial, I’m making more the next time, the egg roll sized pizza roll experiment was a success, to include cheese pull!
Costing me $2.99 for a 16 ounce package at Lucky Market, I’m giving Dynasty Egg Roll Wrappers 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. They’re easy to use and deliver a big time crunch. In addition to making more pizza rolls, I’m looking forward to trying them in a spring roll preparation as well.
Cost Comparison: Compare that Lucky Market price to the same brand, same size package at the mainstream grocery store – Dillon’s (Kroger) for $5.99! If that isn’t a good argument for supporting a locally owned small business, I don’t know what is!
