A convenient lunch for an on-the-go kind of day.

By Mike Thayer

Thanks to a coupon card for a fundraiser (shout out to Ashley C. and her daughter!), I’ve been sampling the menu from QT Kitchens, enjoying an occasional slice of pizza, a nice sub sandwich, breakfast tacos and more.

Today I checked out the QT Kitchens Brisket BBQ Sandwich and Classic Mac & Cheese.  BBQ and Mac & Cheese is a classic pairing and it sounded good for lunch.

Taking a sandwich and side from the “Grab & Go” bin, you do have the option of doctoring up your sandwich or whatever at the toppings bar with a selection of pickles, diced onion, jalapenos and more, but I opted to do any doctoring if needed at home.

Taking a seat at “Mike’s Bar & Grill,” I sampled the Brisket BBQ sandwich first.  The brisket was shredded, a decent portion and it was tender, with an adequate amount of sauce, almost under dressed.  The sauce I might add, was not overly sweet, a plus.  The bun was soft and held together from first bite to last.  The sandwich is good, but it does need some doctoring up, so I added pickle and a touch more sauce.  It could have used a bit of cole slaw too, but I didn’t have any of that on hand.  The brisket lacks the smoke of a pit preparation, but it is nice and tender and the sauce QT uses is complimentary, enhancing the brisket rather than overpowering it. Doctored up, this is a pretty tasty sandwich.

The Mac & Cheese was good as well, with the only doctoring necessary being a sprinkle of black pepper.  The cheese sauce was creamy good, there was good coverage of it throughout the pasta and the edges had that nice little golden brown crispiness, a texture contrast you want in a good mac & cheese.  This is better than what I’ve had at some fast food restaurants.

What QT Kitchens cranks out compares favorably to Hog Wild Pit BBQ, the McDonald’s of BBQ in Wichita, which isn’t saying much about Hog Wild food.  They may be convenient BBQ and it’s fast, but it’s certainly not the best BBQ in town.  QT Kitchens BBQ isn’t either, but what I sampled today is better than what I’ve eaten at Hog Wild, both the sandwich and the mac & cheese!

The QT Kitchens Brisket BBQ Sandwich is available for $5.69, that’s $1.10 cheaper than a brisket sandwich at Hog Wild.  Bargain!  I enjoyed an even better bargain getting it for free with my coupon card.  The QT Kitchens Mac & Cheese is available for $2.69, so the total price for the sandwich and side totals $8.38 + tax and with the additional purchase of a drink, you’ll pay about the same amount you would for a BBQ Brisket sandwich, mac side and drink at Hog Wild. I’m giving the QT Kitchens Brisket BBQ Sandwich and Mac & Cheese side 3 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  It’s reasonably priced, better than what Hog Wild serves, making it worthy of a repeat buy.  It’s a decent sandwich made better by doctoring up and the Mac & Cheese is above average for fast food.
