Tasty AND Nutritious
By Mike Thayer
Tasty and nutritious, I’ve always got a bag of Bob’s Red Mill Flaxseed Meal in my refrigerator. Versatile, the nutty flavor of flaxseed meal tastes great and really enhances something simple like a bowl of cottage cheese and works well with a lot of recipes.
I prefer the meal over seeds because the human body has a tough time breaking down the outer shell of the seed. In meal form, I can take full advantage of the nutrient rich food. The downside, is the need for refrigeration, as once the seed is milled, the clock ticks a lot faster on spoilage.
Research shows flaxseed may help maintain a healthy weight, reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as lower the risk of some cancers. I love that it’s loaded with nutrients and linked to numerous health benefits, but here’s a food that tastes good that is actually good for you!
I top my cottage cheese with it, giving me a little extra boost in protein (3 grams), in addition to omega-3 fatty acids and several important vitamins and minerals. I’ll also shake some on a tossed salad or sprinkle some on the occasional bowl of oatmeal. It’s nice mixed in with mustard and/or mayo in dressing a sandwich, it’s also a great add to yogurt, pancakes, waffles and smoothies. If you’re a baker, try adding some when mixing up a batch of cookies, muffins or breads.
Costing me $4.59 for a 16 ounce bag, I’m giving Bob’s Red Mill Flaxseed Meal 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Tasty and nutritious, it’s most definitely worthy of a repeat buy and I have to find more ways to incorporate it into my diet, I’m not eating enough of it! I’ve been eating about 2 Tablespoons a day, but the recommended amount is 4 Tablespoons. You can also use Flaxseed meal as an egg replacement, mixing it with water. I’m going to be trying that next, a little scrambled flaxseed, sauteed onion and melted cheese…
$pend Wisely My Friends…
