Quality meat for a low price

By Mike Thayer

My favorite pork cut is the boneless pork loin. You can treat it like a roast, cut it into chops, slice it thin for grilled sandwiches or chunk it up for kabobs. It’s cheap, delicious and a bonus is its flavor versatility. It absorbs marinades/sauces well for any pork dish and works great with just about any chicken recipe to boot!  Try using pork loin instead of that chicken breast or chicken thigh in your favorite chicken recipe, you’ll like it!

Being your own butcher saves money

Because it’s a half loin, there’s not as much of the blade end of the cut, the reddest part of the meat.  So I broke mine down into some chops and chunked some up for a stew.  If it was a full loin, I could have also cut some of the blade portion into boneless pork ribs – DELISH!  For the rest of loin I broke it down into a little roast and center cut chops (the whiter part of the meat).  A boneless pork loin comes with a fat cap, leave that on, it’s FLAVOR!  Don’t trim that until serving time and don’t throw that fat away, trimmings also make a great base for sauces.

Boneless pork loin is perhaps the most economical meat you can buy.  Being your own butcher saves a lot of money and you can freeze the roasts, chops, boneless ribs, kabobs and stew meat for future meals.

For dinner, I pounded out one of those chops, coated it in some seasoned flour and did a shallow fry in some olive oil.  Coupled with yellow rice for a side and a nice pan gravy from the drippings, my dinner was VERY satisfying.

It’s Another Dose of YUM!

Fruit goes great with pork, here’s a quick pan sauce for chops…. Combine pork fat drippings with a little flour, some black berries or blueberries – whatever kind of berry you might have on hand for that matter – and some balsamic vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste and you’ve made an excellent compliment to the chops!

Costing me $7.92, I’m giving the Boneless Half Pork Loin from Aldi 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  For 3.79 pounds of pork, that breaks down to just $2.09 per pound, a bargain these days considering the inflation we’re experiencing.  Compare that price to the mainstream grocery store price of about $11.72 for 3.91 pounds of boneless pork loin, or $2.99 per pound.  The Aldi price is a far better deal, without a sacrifice on product quality.
