Trader Joe’s currently has the lowest price per dozen eggs for major retailers at $3.99.  The average price for a dozen in my neck of the woods is $4.77.

The incredible, edible egg, perhaps the most versatile protein on the planet.   You can have eggs prepared so many different ways, they’re good boiled, scrambled, poached, fried, stir-fried…  They’re fantastic all by themselves, they pair well with so many things (think sunny side up egg on a burger), they’re ingredients in all kinds of dishes from dressings to casseroles and you almost can’t bake without them.

The national average price for a dozen grade A large eggs back in December 2021 was $1.79.

So why have eggs more than doubled in price over the last year?

Some folks blame it all on the bird flu outbreak, but that wouldn’t be accurate.  While the bird flu, which is still lingering, did have an impact on prices, its role wasn’t nearly as large as some people assume.  According to Statista, the egg laying hen population hasn’t dropped all that much.

Egg laying hen population in the U.S. over the last five years (in 1,000s):

  • 2021 – 389,044
  • 2020 – 391, 772
  • 2019 – 399,500
  • 2018 – 394,361
  • 2017 – 378,787

You can see the drop in population from its peak in 2019 with 399.5 million hens, but the U.S. still has a greater population now than it did in 2017, despite the flu.

The real drivers behind increased egg prices:  Feed costs are up 36% over the last year, as are labor costs and utility bills.   Even the price for egg cartons is up!

So it’s not really the bird flu affecting the price so much and it’s not greedy farmers trying to put more money in their pockets, who are realistically just trying to stay ahead of their expenses.

The cheapest eggs in town as of late can be found at Trader Joe’s.
