Day 12 started off with meeting friends for breakfast at Jimmy’s Egg.  Serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch, this Oklahoma City-based joint is a go-to breakfast place for a lot of folks.  With three locations in Wichita, the fast-casual chain has been serving the area for about 15 years.

Gluten-free when eating out is a challenge, especially when a restaurant doesn’t have any stated gluten-free options on the menu and for those with Celiac disease, cross-contamination is a serious concern.  For somebody like me just trying to eliminate wheat products from the diet, a restaurant breakfast is an easier meal to navigate than lunch or dinner, where unknown ingredients in sauces, dressings, and scratch-made condiments may be present.  When it comes to ordering the first meal of the day, meat and eggs are pretty straightforward, and the obvious, stay away from toast, pancakes, and waffles.

With visiting friends the top priority, we took our time to order.  Our server, Shyann, was very patient.  For my breakfast order, I went with their Traditional Breakfast, in which you can customize, two eggs any style, a choice of meats, and two sides.  I  did scrambled eggs and turkey sausage, and for my two sides, I chose tomato slices and fresh fruit.  I think my order surprised my friends, not long ago my order would have consisted of two types of meat (pork sausage and bacon), hashbrowns with cheese, and toast.

It didn’t take long for our orders to arrive and Shyann attentively refreshed our coffee and supply of creamer.  My breakfast hit the spot, the eggs were nicely scrambled, and not too dry, and the turkey sausage was seasoned well, with a nice, light exterior crust from the flattop.  The tomato slices were pleasantly ripe, and the fruit – cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and grapes – was refreshing.  We were all satisfied with our meals, it was all good.

Here’s the Day 12 Menu:

As I was putting the afternoon snack and dinner numbers on the chart, I was a bit amazed by the final net caloric intake.  I got plenty of protein, the carb count was close to target (around 60 grams desired) and the most important thing, my stomach didn’t complain at all today despite eating much less than normal (around 1600 calories), there was no “Feed Me” messages from my belly and no gluten repercussions because I didn’t have anything wheat.

Jimmy’s Egg serves up a very tasty turkey sausage

Costing me $14.28 for the breakfast and coffee, I’m giving Jimmy’s Egg 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap Stars.  It’s a repeat visit-worthy breakfast place, serving up a quality plate of food in a casual, comfortable setting.  My friends and I arrived at 9 am and didn’t leave until almost noon.

The Jimmy’s Egg visited on this occasion is located at 550 N Webb Rd suite b, Wichita, KS 67206.  The coffee was good, the food was tasty, and the service was friendly.
