Is there anything much better than a good burger and a cold beer on a Friday night after work?
That’s what you get at Walt’s East Bar and Grill in Wichita.
The place has a neighborhood bar kind of feel, it’s old school, complete with wood paneling, cushy leather seat booths and TV’s just about everywhere you look. I strolled in at 5pm and the place was already busy with regulars coming in, a good sign that I would enjoy the Walt’s experience. Even the outdoor seating area was filling up.
Never having eaten at Walt’s before but hearing their burgers were good, I went with the Classic along with a side of hand cut fries. They have a nice variety of burgers on the menu, but I wanted to keep it simple. After all, if the basic burger can’t be done well, then there’s no real point in trying other varieties. Besides burgers, Walt’s menu also has a nice variety of comfort food classics, such as chicken fried steak, catfish, tacos and daily specials like meatloaf.
The burger was served quickly. The Classic comes topped with mustard, pickles, & fried onions (or a pickle-onion relish), on a butter toasted bun. It was seasoned well and the burger to bun ratio was spot on. The fries were also seasoned well, but they weren’t fried twice, which a good fry always is. A double fry achieves the golden brown and crispy outside, but soft and ‘tender-chewy’ inside texture making for the perfect bite. They were good fries, but not great.
The service was great, the atmosphere was fun and the prices were very reasonable. The burger was very tasty with the only negative being the fries were a bit whimpy. I can see why the regulars are regulars. I look forward to my next visit and trying something else on the great looking menu.
Walt’s East Bar and Grill is located at 7732 E. Central Ave., in the Piccadilly Square, Wichita.
