Are you spending too much on toilet paper?
By Mike Thayer
Toilet paper, a.k.a. “Bath Tissue”… Did you know the U.S. leads the world in toilet paper consumption? Woo-hoo!, now there’s a stat to be proud of! According to Statistica, a consumer market research outfit, the average American goes through about 140 rolls of toilet paper a year. I’m thinking I don’t want to know how they compile that stat.
So how partial are you to your Charmin, Northern, or whatever preferred brand of toilet paper you like to cling to?… Yes, I went there, pun intended.
I know what you’re thinking… “A review on toilet paper? Really?”
Yes, really.
Charmin is the name brand go-to for a lot of folks and they like to pummel us with their TV commercials featuring those bears with clean bums.
Cute.
All brands claim to be soft and strong, Northern, Cottonelle, Scott, Angel Soft and others. But toilet paper can get kind of pricey and the alternative, those discount brands, can be scratchy and tears apart easily. Another option is wholesale club Costco and their store brand Kirkland, which can be purchased for less than those name brands. Also soft and strong, you save money because you’re buying in bulk. Same thing goes for Sam’s Club and their brand, Member’s Mark.
But even if you’re a wholesale club shopper, are you still paying too much for TP?
Regular readers know I’m a fan of and regular shopper at Dollar Tree. My bathroom is stocked with Dollar Tree toilet paper, er “Bath Tissue.” The Dollar Tree brand is literally called Strong and Soft, and it is. That’s about as far as I’m going to go into the nuances of evaluating toilet paper, a dirty job.
So let’s talk numbers.
The prices shown for Charmin and Northern are average prices at the mainstream grocery store. Charmin is available at the wholesale clubs in bulk sizes, which reduces the price per roll, but NOT below the clubs’ respective house brands.
Test results show that Charmin is the strongest, Northern is the most comfortable, Kirkland provides the biggest roll but you have to wipe that against a weaker strength factor… See what I did there.. “Wipe that…” Sorry, couldn’t resist. The best wipe for your toilet paper buck (yes, I went there again) is the Dollar Tree Strong and Soft. Look at how much cheaper it is!
Costing $1.25 for 4 rolls, I’m giving Strong and Soft toilet paper from Dollar Tree 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. It’s a soft and very serviceable bath tissue. It’s not scratchy, there’s minimal lint and minimal rip. For the money, you’ll get a clean bum for less money without a sacrifice in comfort.
