Craving a juicy burger and hearing good things about the place, I decided to pick up some burgers and fries for dinner last night from Big Larry’s Burgers in Valley Center.
Reasonably priced and touting a menu filled with various burger options, I opted to stay basic with cheeseburgers and their fresh cut fries.
The burgers (1/4 pound) were perfectly cooked, had a perfect patty (1/4 pound) to bun ratio, but was under-seasoned. Mustard, pickle and onions comes standard on their cheeseburger, served on a butter toasted bun. With a mission to evaluate the burger “‘As Is” I took my first bite. I expected a classic savory burger mouthful, but the amount of onions bordered on overkill. I got a nice note of mustard, the complimentary tang of the pickle, but the savory taste of meat got lost a bit with all onion. The burgers lacked balance. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed, Big Larry’s Burgers are average.
As far as their fresh cut fries go, the serving size is huge but they’re average too. They were seasoned well, but wimpy – as in lacking that light crunch on the outside but tender potato on the inside – they were borderline greasy. I’m not sure they twice fry their fries, which is the secret to a great french fry, no matter the cut.
The service was friendly and timely, the place was clean. Overall, Big Larry’s is good, but not great. I’ll chalk it up to an off night based on the word-of-mouth I’ve heard. Trying some of their other menu items is on my “To Do” list, so stay tuned for the next review.
