Aldi vs. Dollar Tree: More than twice the mashed potato at Aldi for about the same price.

By Mike Thayer

Here’s another example of why I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at Aldi.

Instant mashed potatoes, Aldi’s store brand, Chef’s Cupboard.  You can get a 13.75 ounce box of plain mashed for $1.39.

Go to Dollar Tree and you can get name brand, Idahoan, but you get downsized with a 6.2 ounce box of the “Original” mashed potatoes (a.k.a., plain) for $1.25.  “Buy” the way (pun intended), I dare you to tell the taste difference in a blind taste test.  You may spend slightly less at Dollar Tree, but you don’t get near as much product.

If you like that name brand box of instant mashed potato, you can get a 13.75 ounce box of it (same size as the Aldi brand) at the mainstream grocery store, in my case, Dillon’s, a Kroger affiliate, for $2.69.  You’ll pay nearly twice as much, for virtually the same product and weight.  And if you’re OK with the store’s discount brand (Kroger), a 13.75 ounce box is $2.49, a savings of just 20 cents from the name brand, but still quite a bit more expensive than Chef’s Cupboard at Aldi.
