Signature dishes, it’s food that embodies a region, it’s a celebration of iconic cultural flavors, where natives and tourists alike embrace that bowl, that plate, that sandwich, that finger food and say, “You HAVE to try this!”….
Examples of iconic signature dishes includes the Rueben sandwich in New York; crab cakes in Baltimore; The Philly Cheese Steak in Philadelphia; Fried Chicken in Atlanta; Deep dish pizza in Chicago; Bratwurst in Milwaukee; Gumbo in New Orleans and Cedar plank Salmon in Seattle.
So with all that iconic food in mind, does Wichita have a signature dish, or is the Mid-Continent City a melting pot of foods and flavors?
Having fun and inspired by this Signature Dish Challenge, I decided to enjoy the offerings of a restaurant that claims to make Wichita’s best tacos – Taco Shop!
Taco Shop Value #3 & Nachos Supreme
Taco Shop is a local fast food restaurant serving up Tex Mex cuisine, here’s a snippet from their website: Found at the Taco Shop –and only at the Taco Shop – – the fun and easy-going traditional Mexican taste-de- light of Wichita. Every Taco Shop offers a pleasant atmosphere where friends and families can relax while enjoying mouthwatering Mexican food at very affordable prices.
Entering the Taco Shop located on South Webb Road shortly after 6pm on a Monday, I was greeted immediately by one of two ladies working the cash registers. The parking lot was packed, the restaurant was near capacity, there was a line in the drive through, there was an army of employees working the kitchen.
“Wow,” I’m thinking to myself, “This place is popular!”
“Why?” I wondered (no, not out loud)…
Then I remembered from my online viewing the day before…..
“Oh,” I replied to myself, “It’s Monday and all you can eat tacos from 4 – 9pm for $5.” (I wasn’t talking out loud, really!)
I’ve never eaten at a Taco Shop before and so it was impressive to walk into a local taco joint I’ve heard good things about and see such a crowd and smiles on crowd faces.
Approaching the counter it was time to order…
I wanted a meal that included a taco of course, but not just tacos, I wanted to also sample another item or two to get a better sense of what Taco Shop has to offer. I went with the Taco & Sancho Value Meal #3 which includes a medium drink. And who can go to a taco joint for the first time and NOT sample their nachos, right? I also got a side of Nachos Supreme.
Taco, Sancho & Nachos for dinner!
My to-go order came to $7.18 and it was bagged and ready for me before I could put the lid on my self-serve drink! I swear that is THE fastest meal prep I’ve ever experienced and I was especially impressed considering how busy the place was.
So how was the taco and the rest of my Taco Shop meal you ask?
Quite Good!
The beef in the taco was seasoned nicely, the shell was crispy and NOT dripping with grease, the lettuce was fresh and the cheese portion was generous. Taco Shop cranks out a pretty darn good taco. Is it the best in Wichita? Stay tuned….. The Sancho was also tasty and the Nachos Supreme, with the black olive, green onion and refried beans really hit the spot. Taco Shop packages things up well too, providing a large packet of sour cream along with a large dipping tub of salsa to go with your meal.
Taco Shop is a repeat buy, the price is wallet friendly, the meal was quite tasty and the service was fast! Taco Shop, a local shop, represents Wichita and tacos in a great way, getting four out of five stars.
The Taco Shop visited is located at: 1652 S. Webb Rd., Wichita, KS. 67207.
Don’t go to Taco Bell, go to Taco Shop instead!
But my search has only just begun…. I’ll be visiting a large variety of restaurants and sampling all types of food, getting input from patrons and restaurant gurus alike, trying to get a feel for what Wichita’s Signature Dish might be….. Oh, and national chain restaurants will NOT be a part of this challenge, I’m keeping it as local as possible, a true evaluation in finding what might be Wichita’s Signature Dish.
Stay tuned!
What a challenge huh? I am SO looking forward to the rest of this challenge!
What do you think might be Wichita’s signature dish? Comment below.
