This isn’t a national day of food celebration, it’s International.

If you have never eaten falafel before, then June 12 is the day to give it a try, joining others worldwide who will be celebrating the annual event that is International Falafel Day.

A common street food throughout the Middle East, falafel is also popular among vegetarians and vegans everywhere.  In many countries, the savory treat is a deep-fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas, spices, and other ingredients.  Other countries such as Egypt feature fava beans, and elsewhere it could be a combination of chickpeas and fava beans.  The most common way to serve it is stuffed inside fresh Pita bread.

Fortunately, Wichita can boast of some great places to get your falafel fix.  Here is a short list of restaurants to celebrate International Falafel Day in the ICT:

N&J Bakery, located at 5600 E Lincoln St, Wichita, KS 67218.  They make their own pita, they have in my humble opinion the best hummus in town, and the falafel is stellar.  If you don’t want to do the vegan/vegetarian thing with the falafel, their Chicken Shawarma is top notch too.  You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

Bella Luna Cafe – Two Convenient Locations To Serve You – East at Bradley Fair or West at New Market Square.  Great Mediterranean Food with American Fusion.

Sesame – Mediterranean Kitchen, located at 2755 N Maize Rd Suite 109, Wichita, KS 67205.  Some places call it a falafel sandwich, others call it a falafel wrap, and Sesame – Mediterranean Kitchen calls it a Falafel Gyro!  The Mediterranean specialty is wrapped in pita bread with tomatoes, parsley, and tahini sauce.

Cafe Maurice, located at 9747 E 21st St N #121, Wichita, KS 67206.  A melting pot of Lebanese and Mediterranean inspired cuisine mixed with a French attitude.

Mediterranean Grill, located at 335 S Towne East Mall Dr, Wichita, KS 67207.  A relaxed atmosphere establishment serving all the familiar Mediterranean favorites including baba ghanoush & beef kebabs, and of course, falafel.

Kabaji Grill, located at 6257 E 21st St N, Wichita, KS 67208.  Known for their gyros, they have a full menu of Mediterranean classics.

Shawarma UR’s, located at 8641 W 13th St N Ste 118, Wichita, KS. 67212.  Middle Eastern Cuisine featuring Classic Beef Shawarma, Classic Chicken Shawarma, Falafel, Hummus, Pita Bread, Fattoush Salad, Tabouli, and more.  Dine-in, Drive-thru, In-store pickup.

Meddy’s – With five locations in Wichita, Meddy’s is a convenient way to get your Falafel fix.  Their version is a mix of lentils, garbanzo beans, fava beans, herbs, and spices.  Wrapped in grilled pita bread and served with tomatoes, parsley, pickled turnips, and tahini sauce.

Enjoy International Falafel Day!
