Is there anything more comforting after coming in from the cold than a cup of hot chocolate?
And while those Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate packets are OK in a pinch, making your own hot chocolate is SO much better!
Ingredients:
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 ounces)
- a splash of vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 4 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate, roughly chopped
- 4 ounces semi-sweet baking chocolate, roughly chopped
- 16-20 food grade popsicle or lollipop sticks
- An assortment of goodies, marshmallows, M&Ms, Andes Creme De Menthe Thins (chopped), Butterfingers (rough chopped), crushed candy canes, etc.
Directions:
You’ll need two silicone molds for this, preferably ones that have eight squares, one square being the ideal size for a cup of rich and delicious Hot Chocolate on a Stick. Molds with smaller squares or even ice cube trays will work too, just remember you’ll need more than one square of those to make a mug of hot chocolate. Set the molds aside. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream and vanilla extract, stir to incorporate. Heat the mixture for about 3-4 minutes, just shy of coming to a boil Dump in the chocolate as evenly as possible and remove the pan from heat. Let that sit undisturbed for about 3-4 minutes, this is going to soften up that chocolate. When that time is up whisk the hot milk/cream mixture and chocolate until you get a smooth chocolate sauce. Spoon the chocolate sauce into the silicone molds, each square about 3/4 full. Place 1 popsicle or lollipop stick into the center of each chocolate square, then add your goodies of choice to the top of each chocolate square, slightly pressing down. In addition to adding some great flavors, this helps to keep the stick nice and straight until the chocolate sets. Place the hot chocolate squares into the refrigerator for at least three hours to chill and set. Overnight is best.
When you’re ready for the best hot chocolate you ever had, remove one of the chocolate squares from the silicone mold and place it in a coffee cup/mug. Remember, if you use molds with smaller squares, you’ll need two of those squares. In a microwave safe 2 cup measuring cup heat up about 1 1/2 cups of whole milk on high for 2 – 2 1/2 minutes. Pour the hot milk into your cup and let it sit for a minute, then stir with the stick until the chocolate is melted and you have that rich and delicious cup of hot chocolate, with candy accents!
Enjoy and have fun with it, play with the flavors! Other great add ideas are toffee bits, Whoppers, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chocolate chips and caramel sauce.
