Being a Wichita foodie isn’t just about knowing where the best restaurants are in the Wichita metro, it’s also about knowing where to get the best ingredients so you can make great eats at home, to include copycat dishes!

Here’s this week’s side-by-side comparison of grocery store prices for Aldi, Dillon’s and Walmart, covering the basics.

This week’s list, dated January 2, 2023, has 19 items on the essentials list which remains unchanged.

Remember that items featured will be the store brand for each respective store, unless otherwise labeled. Prices are good as of the writing and could change by the time you make that grocery run.

Takeaways from this week’s price review:

  • Aldi’s was slamming busy on Monday.  Despite multiple registers open, there were lines of people waiting to check out extending down the aisles.  Shelves were looking sparse, especially in the meat department.
  • Prices are mixed week over week.  Aldi – down $4.26 but only because chicken breasts were out-of-stock; Dillon’s – unchanged;  Walmart – down $2.83
  • For the second week in a row, Aldi was the cheapest place to grocery shop this week, but again, the boneless/skinless chicken breast was out-of-stock.  Figure that in based on the previous week’s price and the revised total would be $58.63, almost $2 higher than Walmart.
  • Walmart continues trend of downsizing some of their products, another form of higher prices by giving you less. Fish, the frozen Tilapia went from 32 ounces to 24. Lunchmeat containers went from 9 ounces, to 7.  You can still get the 9 ounce containers in select varieties, Ham – $3.98 for 9 ounces; Oven Roasted Turkey – $4.46 for 9 ounces.
  • Walmart is the only store of the three that is charging dramatically different prices for varying lunchmeats, especially turkey, notably higher in price.
