Being a Wichita foodie isn’t just about knowing where the best restaurants are in the Wichita metro, it’s also about knowing where to get the best ingredients so you can make great eats at home, to include copy cat dishes!

Here’s this week’s side-by-side comparison of grocery store prices for Aldi, Dillon’s, Walmart and Target.  Covering the basics, a few new items have been added to the shopping list.

Last week’s list dated December 13, 2022 contained 12 essential items.  It’s interesting to note that overall, prices are up slightly.  For those same items reviewed this week, Aldi’s total was up 42 cents, Dillon’s went up 70 cents and Walmart went up 12 cents respectively.  Target was the only store showing a drop in total price, down 60 cents.

This week’s list, dated December 19, 2022, added 7 more items to the essentials list, for a total of 19.

Remember that items featured will be the store brand for each respective store, unless otherwise labeled. Prices are good as of the writing and could change by the time you make that grocery run.

Legend:  Green highlights show the lowest price for an item.  Red highlights the highest price.

In these inflationary times, Walmart’s ability to use their large volume buying power in order to keep prices lower than their competitors is evident.  They are the cheapest place to shop this week for the 19 essential items listed.  And for the second week in a row, Dillon’s (Kroger) still seems to be in a price war battle with Aldi in attempting to gain back market share and customers lost to the discount grocer.

Takeaways from this week’s price review:

  • Walmart is the cheapest place to grocery shop, but if you don’t care for their discount brand, Great Value, it may not be worth your while and the overall savings was less than $3 vs. all competitors for the essential items listed.  Keep in mind however, that a larger cartload purchase could lead to more significant savings.
  • Inflation has hit Aldi the hardest.  They used to be hands down the cheapest place to shop, week in, week out and for most items.  That’s no longer the case.  It would appear that their supply line, distribution/vendor network just doesn’t have the reach/pull that Kroger, Walmart and Target do.  Highlighting that new reality, the price for a dozen eggs at Aldi was about 99 cents before inflation rolled in, they had the cheapest eggs in town.  At that time, nearly two years ago, a dozen eggs at Dillon’s (Kroger) ran about $1.50, comparatively.  Aldi is now the most expensive place to buy eggs.  The same holds true for other essentials such as milk and lunch meat.
  • A person could save money buying certain items at one store, other items at another store.  I know some folks that do that, but it’s not worth the gas.
