Bachelor on the Cheap

After two weeks of focusing on items for a Super Bowl watch party, (where Dillons was the cheapest for prepared foods) it’s back to the weekly essentials list for this report.

Here’s this week’s side-by-side comparison of grocery store prices for Aldi, Dillon’s and Walmart.   Trader Joe’s has been dropped from the weekly review.  With that store featuring organic items, it’s just not an apples to apples comparison vs. regular items.  I will say that Trader Joe’s still came in cheaper than Dillons for the weeks reviewed.

Covering the basics, this week’s list, dated February 13, 2023, is unchanged in item count from January 23, the last time a weekly essentials review was conducted for a total of 25 grocery products.

For the essentials list dated January 23, 2023 it’s interesting to note that prices were mixed week vs. week.  For those same 25 items, Aldi went up $4.76, the Dillons total went down $0.68 and Walmart was up $4.50.

Keep in mind that items featured is the store brand for each respective store, unless otherwise labeled.  Prices can vary from store-to-store, especially for Dillons and Walmart, to a lesser extent Aldi.  Store managers have the flexibility to adjust prices, lower or higher. Prices are good as of this writing and could change by the time you make that grocery run.

Takeaways from this week’s price review:

  • Despite a big jump in overall price from the previous review, Aldi was the cheapest place to shop this week, that’s four reviews in a row in being the most Bachelor on the Cheap wallet friendly.  The price gap with Dillons did tighten however.  The gap was about a $10 difference on January 23, this week it’s $4.61.
  • Dillon’s continues to be the most expensive place to grocery shop on a week-to-week basis even WITH the use of their loyalty card.   Look at all the red in the Dillons price column!  Check out the related article link, “Mainstream Grocery vs. Discount Grocery: Dillon’s (Kroger) vs. Aldi.  They do have the cheapest eggs, which happen to be dropping in price at all stores.
  • Walmart’s everyday low prices approach is appealing, especially if you’ll be picking up other general merchandise when grocery shopping.
