Bachelor on the Cheap
Handy to always have on hand in your freezer, chicken is a great source of protein, it’s lean, diet friendly and despite inflation is still one of the cheaper meat protein options out there.
I picked up a package of frozen chicken breasts yesterday while conducting my weekly grocery store prices review.
Weighing 2.5 pounds, the package contained three large chicken breasts, Averaging over 8 ounces each.
The breasts were trimmed of virtually all fat which is a good but also kind of bad thing. Some brands of frozen chicken breasts can contain a lot of fat and you pay for that excess, not cool. Then there’s the having to trim that excess (key word, excess) fat before cooking, not convenient. But not having any fat at all also means a loss of flavor, resulting in boring chicken that can easily dry out. What you end up doing to compensate is add more olive oil, canola oil, butter or whatever fat you’re using to properly and evenly cook that chicken with. You can add all the seasoning you want, but without a little fat, chicken breast can become very dry and not nearly as enjoyable.

Still a huge portion of chicken, with just half a breast.
The first thing I prepared using this chicken was an Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich. I only needed to use half a breast, coating it with panko bread crumbs, frying it to perfection, then topping it with a scratch made marinara, melted mozzarella cheese and served on a garlic butter toasted bun. It was delicious!
Costing me $7.99 for a 2.5 pound bag of frozen chicken breasts, I’m giving Trader Joe’s Frozen Chicken Breast Meat 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Reasonably priced, the $7.99 price breaks down to $3.20 per pound, not bad. It’s not the cheapest frozen chicken available, but it’s good quality chicken. My only knock on this chicken is it’s excessively trimmed. A little bit of fat = more flavorful, juicier chicken.
