Bachelor on the Cheap

Pasta dishes are SO delicious, SO comforting and ever since sampling Trader Joe’s Lobster Ravioli I’ve been telling myself I need to sample all the other Trader Joe’s fresh pasta offerings.  But the lobster ravioli is so good, I fell into a habit of making it a repeat buy.

I broke from the norm during my latest visit to the store in conducting my weekly grocery store prices review, picking up a package of Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Ravioli.

I’ve never had butternut squash ravioli before, but I’ve heard about how good it is paired up with melted garlic butter.  So after shopping and putting the groceries away, I prepared the ravioli for lunch.

I love ravioli, the delightful pillows of pasta filled with savory goodness, but it is a labor intensive pasta to create at home from scratch and why I leave that chore to Trader Joe’s.    The pasta is super easy to prepare, putting the pasta in lightly salted boiling water, letting it cook for 3 minutes, then drain.  While the pasta was cooking, I melted some butter, adding some garlic and thyme.  I put the drained pasta into the pan with the melted butter/garlic/thyme, lightly tossed and took a bite of ravioli before plating…

NICE!  The package claims that there are three servings, but we all know packaged serving numbers aren’t real portions…  that’s right, I ate the whole thing.  Realistically, a package is pasta for two.

Trader Joe’s makes good pasta, period.  The pasta was perfectly cooked per the package instruction and that filling…   quite delicious and nicely portioned.  It is a bit on the sweet side however, so the next time I’ll be adding some cayenne pepper to the butter sauce to balance out the sweet.

Costing me $3.69 for an 8.8 ounce package, I’m giving Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Ravioli 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  It’s obviously tasty, no leftovers…  But it does eat a bit sweet and needs a spice heat add.  Very reasonably priced, it’s worthy of a repeat buy.  Trader Joe’s is 2 for 2 in cranking out some really good pasta and I’m looking forward to sampling all the other varieties
