The older I get, the more I appreciate nuts. In my younger days, my appreciation for them was focused on taste and texture. But nuts have awesome nutritional value as well and are a versatile food, not only are they good for snacking, you can include them in a range of recipes as well, savory and sweet.
Today I’m reviewing Southern Grove Mixed Nuts, the first time trying this brand. Southern Grove is an Aldi private label brand, offering a variety of nuts, nut mixes, fruit & nut combinations, and trail mixes.
A mix of peanuts, almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, and pecans, the Southern Grove nuts are pleasantly seasoned with sea salt. The mix is about 50% peanuts, a standard ratio for most brands and basic mixed nut offerings. When you see product descriptions like “Deluxe” and “Select”, that’s where the peanut level is reduced or dropped completely in favor of more cashews, almonds, pistachios, etc., which also drives up the price.
a great snack, tasty, a good source of protein, and heart-healthy.
This is a nice mix, the nuts are good quality and the sea salt is perfect, a light compliment to all the nut flavors, not overpowering. The 50% peanut ratio may be a bit much for some, but as a peanut fan I’m OK with it and you really can’t complain considering the price. The portion of other tasty nuts is more than enough to satisfy a mixed nut craving.
Costing me $4.99 for a 14.75-ounce container at Aldi, I’m giving Southern Grove Mixed Nuts 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Compare that price to Planters and their basic nut mix, a 10.3-ounce container priced at $6.49 at Dillons (Kroger) and $4.98 at Walmart. Dang, check out the price gouge by Dillons, loyalty card be damned. You get far more nut bang for the buck with Southern Grove, without a sacrifice in flavor or quality. Southern Grove Mixed Nuts are worthy of a repeat buy.
