16 Ounce Box

By Mike Thayer

I’m not much of a pancake or waffle guy. I used to fix them every weekend for my three sons when they were young, but I would always let them fight over who got the last one while I focused on the bacon, or sausage and eggs.

But every once-in-awhile, I do get a hankering for pancakes or waffles, but oddly, for dinner, not breakfast.  Tonight was one of those nights, so I reached in the pantry and pulled out a never been opened box of Natural Grocer’s Gluten Free Pancake & Waffle Mix that I bought back in July.

Why gluten free?  I was first introduced to a gluten free diet by an old girlfriend back in 2020, shout out to Lori S.!  She and wheat don’t get along and kudos to Beautiful (my pet name for Lori), I started paying more attention to food nutrition hanging with her. When I cooked for her, whatever I was preparing I was all in regarding her dietary needs (she shouldn’t eat nightshade veggies either), embracing those needs for the both of us, sharing, caring, from appetizer to dessert.  Long story short, I haven’t sought out a diagnosis for being gluten intolerant and I don’t have celiac disease, but I did learn from Beautiful that I feel better physically when not eating so much wheat. To this day, I tend to go for the gluten free option when it comes to grocery shopping and purchasing noodles, crackers, baking mixes and the like.

Tasty, tasty, tasty!

Following the preparation instructions on the box along with a big splash of Italian Sweet Cream, these things griddled up nicely and gosh darn it, they were the best tasting pancakes I’ve had in a long time!  Thick, fluffy and with the outer rim having that ever-so-slight crispy, melted butter edge the cakes were eye-opening good.  I didn’t need syrup!  If you would have put a stack of regular pancakes prepared the same next to what I fixed and it was a blind taste test, I don’t think I would have been able to tell which stack was gluten free.  I know delicious though and these pancakes were fire!

Available for $4.99 for a 16 ounce box, I’m giving Natural Grocer’s Gluten Free Pancake & Waffle Mix 5 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  The pancakes are rather tasty and the mix is very reasonably priced.  Compare the Natural Grocer’s Mix to King Arthur Gluten Free Pancake mix, also costing about $4.99 but 15 ounces.  Krusteaz Gluten Free Mix costs around $5.49 for a 16 ounce box.  The average price for Bisquick Gluten Free Pancake & Baking Mix is $6.49 for a 16 ounce box.
