Pretty much a cheaper version of Velveeta slices.

I’m a cheese freak, love it, all kinds.  I even like the processed stuff, especially for its melting qualities.  C’mon, even cheese snobs should admit that a healthy handful of cubes from a block of Velveeta makes for a good base ingredient in making a nice nacho cheese dip.

I don’t normally buy singles wrapped cheese, but on occasion, I do pick up a package to make a quick/convenient grilled cheese, a Philly Cheese Steak, or for a melted cheese topper on some hash browns or a casserole.   It’s really handy being able to reach in the fridge, grab a slice or two and quickly put it on whatever I’m creating.  There’s no fuss, no jar, no need for a utensil, no slicing, no cutting board, no mess.

My go-to is Kroger 4 Cheese Blend.  It’s a processed cheese, with very similar texture and melting properties as Velveeta slices and it’s quite a bit cheaper.  A blend of Cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack and Mozzarella cheeses, it has a nice balance of flavors and good melting properties.

Much better melted than as is (not a first choice in making a cold cut sandwich), you get the notes of the various cheeses, the mild buttery flavors of the Cheddar and Colby, the creamier elements of the Monterey Jack and the slightly salty tang of Mozzarella.

TIP:  Don’t eat cold cheese!  Well, you can, it’s still tasty, but not near as tasty as allowing the cheese to come to room temperature.  Cheese flavors are much more robust when served at room temperature or in the case of a good melting cheese – ooey, gooey.

Costing me $2.29 for a 16 count singles package, I’m giving Kroger 4 Cheese Blend 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  It’s flavorful and melts nicely, it’s a convenient cheese for any item/dish that calls for a melt.  When you don’t have the time to slice or cube from a block, this is a good alternative.  Compare that price to Velveeta singles, which will cost you around $4.49 for a 16 slice package at the mainstream grocery store.  That’s a savings of $2.20 for virtually the same thing.
