Southwest Flavor
By Mike Thayer
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. To me there’s nothing more comforting to start the day than a cup of coffee and a warm breakfast sandwich of some type, meat, cheese, egg in a biscuit, crescent roll or wrapped in a tortilla.
But I’m trying to cut back on the carbs, which means I need to change my morning habit a bit, so it’s out with the biscuit, crescent and traditional tortilla options. Looking for another vessel to wrap breakfast meat, egg and cheese goodness in, I picked up a package of egg white wraps made by Egglife and thought I’d give them a try.
Coming in an array of flavors, Original, Southwest, Italian, Bagel and Sweet Cinnamon, the egg white wraps are 30 calorie tortillas made from cage free egg whites. There’s no flour making them gluten free, there’s no corn so no GMO worries. It’s a low carb tortilla option with 5 grams of protein and 0 fat.
The important thing though, how do these tortillas taste and will they be a suitable substitute for a flour tortilla?
I purchased the Southwest flavor of Egglife Egg White Wraps, as the original option was not available. But that’s OK, a little Southwest flavor in a breakfast sandwich is a good thing. Per the packaging, the wraps can be enjoyed straight out of the bag, microwaved for 10-15 seconds or heated up in a pan for 30 – 35 seconds per side.
In taking a tortilla out of the bag, it has a moist and almost rubbery feel, not a good texture in hand, so eating one of these wraps right out of the bag is not appealing. I did take a bite from the edge however, not bad flavor, I picked up the Southwest flavor notes of garlic, onion, cumin, cayenne and red pepper.
Not liking the texture, I decided to ‘toast’ the tortilla once assembled with the egg, cheese and bacon, but that presented another problem. Instead of giving the wrap a classic, light crunch like you get in a traditional flour tortilla, the result was an over-cooked egg white. Yes, it got lightly golden brown and the texture improved, but now the wrap had the “egg cooked a bit too long” taste…
In a second breakfast trial, I had a wrap as is out of the package but I just couldn’t handle the moist, rubbery texture. With half a breakfast wrap left, I put it in the microwave which improved the texture. This is the most palatable way to eat these ‘tortillas’.
Costing me $4.75 at Aldi for a package of 6 wraps, I’m giving the Egglife Egg White Wraps 3 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. I like that it’s low carb, the flavor is good, but that texture prevents this from being a repeat buy. I think I’d rather have my breakfast tortilla free than buy these wraps again and I don’t think trying another flavor would help, it’s a texture thing.
