I love a good brat. Beer brats, cheddar brats, brats bathed in wine, or a classic grilled brat with sauerkraut and mustard on a pretzel bun, brats are SO tasty any way served!
So when I saw “Bratwurst” flavored potato chips when picking up a few groceries in Aldi the other day, I HAD to grab bag.
Exclusive to Aldi, Clancy’s makes a full line of snack foods, with over 40 varieties to choose from.
The brand is kind of hit-and-miss though. While their regular classic potato chips are good and in my book a smarter buy than over-priced classic Lay’s, some of the other Clancy’s chip options are less-than-stellar. I’ve found their stackable chips, a.k.a., “crisps” to be greasy, the Cheddar & Sour Cream chips to be visually disappointing and Clancy’s knock-off of Nacho Cheese flavored tortilla chips come up short in flavor, texture, and crunch. No knock-off measures up to Doritos when it comes to Nacho Cheese Chips.

Consistent size, smoky flavor
The Bratwurst chips however are pretty good. In taking that first bite, I was immediately hit with smoky notes, followed by a nice hint of garlic. I wouldn’t call the flavor “Bratwurst” though as much as I would describe it more simply as “Grilled.” Overall, the chips had a good crunch, they were evenly sized with minimal imperfections, and there was negligible breakage in the bottom of the bag.
Costing me $1.99 for a 9.5-ounce bag, I’m giving Clancy’s Bratwurst Flavored Potato Chips 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. More than reasonably priced, they’ve got a nice smoke flavor with a hint of garlic, just not quite ‘bratwurst.’ It’s a novel flavor worthy of a repeat buy. Clancy’s also has a beer flavor, I’ll be trying that one next. Hmm, brat chips, chased by beer…
