Not an ordinary snack

By Mike Thayer

While on the road recently and in a snack mood, I was looking for a place to stop but I didn’t want an ordinary snack.  Chips weren’t going to cut it, neither was beef jerky or anything sweet.

Then, as if there was a snack god, appeared an A&W.  I knew right then and there what I was going to snack on, didn’t need to see the menu.

CHEESE CURDS!

Here’s how A&W describes them:  Pop ‘em, dip ‘em, stretch ‘em.  Our fun side. Real 100% Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese lightly breaded and golden-fried. Taste perfection.

I’ve had these before, a work friend clued me in on them a few years back, tasty, tasty tasty!

It is a fun side, with the light breading providing an ever-so-slight crunch before hitting that Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese which is delightfully melted on the outside yet firm enough to give you a good cheesy chew like a mozzarella stick.  And unlike a mozzarella stick, these curds are so good, they don’t need a dipping sauce. In fact, even though A&W suggests you can “dip ’em” in their description, they don’t provide a dipping sauce.  There’s no need, the combination of the golden brown breading and that cheddar cheese packs all the flavor you need.

Costing me about $3, I’m giving A&W’s Cheese Curds 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap Stars.  They’re reasonably priced, A&W gives you a generous portion and these things are most definitely a repeat buy.  But eat them while they’re hot, it’s not nearly as good an eat once that cheese starts to cool.
