At first glance, not seeing much chicken…
By Mike Thayer
Out and about running some errands earlier today, it was time to take a break for lunch. Arby’s was conveniently close by and I was in the mood for something spicy.
Pulling into the drive through just before the lunch rush, there it was prominently placed on the menu board, the Crispy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.
Here’s the description from the Arby’s website: Star top bun on top, star top bun heel on the bottom. What’s in between you ask? Oh, just a crispy, tender filet of buttermilk chicken drenched in spicy buffalo sauce. Oh, and a creamy parmesan peppercorn ranch dressing. And shredded iceberg lettuce. I mean, if you’re into that kind of thing.
After receiving my meal and just a couple minutes from the house, I opted to eat at home, the aromas coming from the bag were intense during the short drive.
In opening up the sandwich container, it seemed like what I was looking at was a lettuce sandwich, but in lifting the top bun, the chicken breast was offset to one side, not centered on the sandwich, chalk it up to sloppy sandwich prep. So the meat to bun ratio was actually adequate with the chicken breast just coming to the edge of the bun on all sides, but I will say this wasn’t a a large piece of chicken by any means. Competitors like Popeye’s, Church’s, KFC and Wendy’s offer chicken that obviously protrudes from the bun. In taking that first bite, the toasted bun was warm and ‘pillowy’ soft and the chicken was nicely fried, tender and juicy. I did get some crunch, but it was softened a bit by the Buffalo and peppercorn ranch dressing application. The sauce combination is spot on however, getting a little heat from the Buffalo and peppercorns with a bit of cool from the ranch. Balancing things out was the fresh shredded lettuce.
Costing a bit over $8 for a combo meal to include curly fries and a drink, I’m giving the Arby’s Crispy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. It’s a good, but not great sandwich, falling just short of a “Wow, this is nice!” response. A bigger piece of chicken. it’s reasonably priced and satisfies the Buffalo flavor craving and is worthy of a repeat buy.
