$2.99 for a 16 ounce package at the mainstream grocery store

Bologna, it’s cheap, convenient, budget friendly, a single-person’s food, a plan ‘B’ food, a college dorm food, a don’t-know-what-else-to-have-so-this-will-have-to-do food…
I love bologna, I grew up on the stuff and I still eat it as an adult. I don’t buy it for budgetary reasons, it’s more of a comfort food for me. Fried bologna sandwiches are awesome! And there’s the convenience factor, throwing a slice or two of bologna between two slices of bread with a little yellow mustard… It’s a quick grab, on-the-go eliminator of stomach growling.
A discount brand alternative, $1.59 for a 16 ounce package at the mainstream grocery store.
Oscar Mayer is a go-to name brand bologna for many, you can’t go wrong with that selection. But if you’re on a budget and would rather not spend the extra money on Oscar Mayer, or if you’re like me and realize that many name brand products aren’t all they’re hyped up to be and/or maybe not worth the price, you can go with a discount brand. With discount brand bologna however, there are taste differences that makes one discount brand stand out over another.
Lunch Mate, available at Aldi, is that discount brand and their bologna is better than Bar-S, another discount option. You’ll find Bar-S at the mainstream grocery stores, offered as an alternative to Oscar Mayer. Having sampled a lot of bologna and various brands to include imports and the expensive stuff from Boar’s Head, when it comes to the discount brands, Lunch Mate has a better bologna recipe. With a more robust, meaty flavor than Bar-S, it makes for a better sandwich. Is Lunch Mate as good as Oscar Mayer original? Not quite, but for me it’s good enough to make Oscar Mayer cost prohibitive. Why pay $2.99 for a pound of brand name bologna that’s only marginally better than what I can get at Aldi for $1.48? With a savings of $1.51 on the bologna alone, that’s significant.
Available at Aldi, $1.48 for a 16 ounce package.
Lunch Mate bologna is tasty and priced right, it’s a repeat buy and I’m giving it 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. If you don’t want to spend $2.99 on the name brand, opt for Lunch Mate instead, it’s a better tasting lunch meat than Bar-S.
