A nice bite of sweet heat

My name is Mike, and I’m a chip-a-holic.

I’m always on the lookout for a fun, new chip snack.   It doesn’t really matter what kind of chip, potato, corn, pita, or tortilla.  They could be regular, with ridges, rolled or puffed.  They could be classic, baked, kettle-cooked, or flavored in some fashion.  Chips are no doubt a comfort food, the crunch, the savory flavor, the salt…

Today I’m sampling Clancy’s Hot Honey Kettle Chips.

Exclusive to Aldi, Clancy’s makes a full line of snack foods, with over 40 varieties to choose from.  The brand is kind of hit-and-miss though.  While their regular classic potato chips are good and in my book a smarter buy than over-priced classic Lay’s, I’ve found their stackable chips, a.k.a., “crisps” to be greasy and not a good alternative to Pringles.  Some of their flavored options are quite good, some need to go back to the drawing board, such as their beer flavored offering.

One of the bigger chips in the bag

When it comes to potato chip crunch, Kettle-cooked chips are King of the Hill.  Clancy’s Hot Honey Kettle Chips deliver on classic kettle crunch, it’s deep, it’s robust.  The kicker for these chips is the sweet heat.  A flavor play off of fast food hot honey chicken sandwiches, wings, and other goodies that have trended well in the last couple of years, it’s a perfect balance of honey and spice.  Paired with the kettle-cooked preparation, it’s an excellent match.

Costing me $1.95 for an 8-ounce bag at Aldi, I’m giving Clancy’s Hot Honey Kettle Chips 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap Stars.  The crunch is satisfying, the flavor profile is spot on, but I will say the chip size is a bit inconsistent and on the smallish side.  There was also a more-than-normal amount of chip breakage in the bag.  With a very reasonable price, the crunch, and the flavor profile make this offering a repeat buy.

$pend Wisely My Friends…
