By Mike Thayer

These cookies were a Christmas tradition in the Thayer household growing up.  My mom would bake a big batch of them, which didn’t last very long with four kids zooming into the kitchen once we heard that timer go off…  It’s a tasty sugar cookie recipe and it doesn’t get much more holiday festive than forming the dough into candy cane shapes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring

Directions:

In a large bowl, stir together 1 cup sugar, the butter, shortening, milk, egg, almond and vanilla extract.  Stir in flour, baking powder and salt.  Divide dough in half.  Stir the red food coloring into one half.  Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours (more is OK).  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  For each candy cane, shape 1 rounded teaspoon of dough from each half into a rope on a lightly floured surface, rolling the dough back and fourth into a 4 inch rope.  Place one red rope and one white rope side-by-side, press together lightly and twist.  Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, curving one end of the twisted rope to give you that candy cane look.  Bake for 9-12 minutes or until the cookies are a very light brown.   Dress with 2 Tablespoons of crushed peppermint candies mixed with 2 Tablespoons sugar (this is optional, I prefer my cookies without the peppermint dress).  Transfer the cookies to a wire rack for cooling, about 30 minutes.

Recipe options:  You can really use your imagination here, replacing the almond extract with peppermint extract.  Maple and vanilla is good pairing.  Think candy cane flavors, anything goes and so do the colors.  Red and green twists are fun, orange extract is tasty fashioned with a combo of red and yellow food coloring and I’m looking forward to trying a blueberry extract with blue food coloring.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas! ~ Mike
