I’m traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn’t matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I’ll have to sample them all in the name of “burger science” (cough).  For the burger criteria, click here.

So it’s a “Happy Monday” the first day of the work week and I’m in need of a burger lunch…  I selected Walt’s East for today’s burger adventure and in full disclosure this is NOT my first visit to Walt’s.  I was first introduced to Walt’s by Vicki S., it was a first date meeting place back in 2016.  Walt’s is a great casual date spot, with a comfortable atmosphere, good food, cold beer, Moscow Mules and a full bar of other options!

With the Burger Challenge in mind, I went with the Walt’s Classic, their hamburgers are touted as “The Best Hamburgers on Planet Earth” according to their website.  The Walt’s Classic consists of a fresh ground beef patty topped with mustard, pickles and fried onions (or pickle-onion relish) on a butter toasted bun, and you can choose your cheese: American, Cheddar, Swiss, Blue Cheese crumbles, or Pepper Jack.  In compliance with my Burger Challenge, I did the bacon add and cheddar cheese.

Sitting at the bar and reminiscing about a past first date passed the time quickly, my burger and fries were delivered quickly and with a smile by Jennifer, the bartender.  After a few pics, I took that first bite…

Where is the seasoning for this burger?  Seriously, the patty was tender, but there was NO robust burger flavor to be had, it lacked flavor and juiciness.  The bacon, while crisp and flavorful, wasn’t appropriately applied to the burger, not even the dreaded “X” method was used, the two slices were just draped hap-haphazardly on the patty.  The grilled onions were decent, the pickles were tart, but I didn’t get them in every bite and the melt on the cheddar cheese was minimal with the bun having a less than respectable toast.  To sum this burger, Walt’s has gone downhill.  What used to be a reliably good burger, is now, “eh.”

Side Note:  The french fries were good, not the best of the challenge but good nonetheless.  They had the light crisp on the outside and fluffy potato goodness on the inside.  Seasoned well, they didn’t need ketchup to enjoy, too bad the same couldn’t be said for the burger.

Costing me $10.73 with tax, for the burger & fries, the Walt’s East Classic Burger w/bacon scored 50 points out of a possible 63, earning it 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  Reasonably priced, it’s a good but not a great burger.  There’s better burgers out there in the Wichita Metro, making what Walt’s presents NOT a repeat buy.  The best burger on planet earth?  HARDLY!  Not even close.  Get real Walt’s!
