I’m traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn’t matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I’ll have to sample them all in the name of “burger science” (cough). For the burger criteria, click here.

Worst visual appeal so far of the Challenge
Today’s burger adventure took me to Dog N Shake, a local Wichita burger joint that’s been serving the area since 1948. Featuring all the classics, burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes, Dog N Shake has four locations in the ICT.
I ordered the Double Cheeseburger with a bacon add and in keeping with the Challenge parameters, got a of side of fries and a soda making it a combo meal. The Dog-N-Shake double cheeseburger is served on a butter toasted bun with mustard, relish and onions. It’s a classic flavor profile for this neck of the woods… Toasted bun, meat, mustard, onions and some kind of pickle. I really like this way to serve up a burger, if it’s done right. Properly seasoned meat paired with tart pickle and mustard is a great combination of flavors.

Sloppy burger prep, thin bacon to one side, almost no relish to speak of
I didn’t get that with what I was served today. The beef was over cooked and the patties were the most bland I’ve had so far during the course of this Challenge. The bacon was super thin and also lacked flavor. Burger assembly was also a bit sloppy, with the bacon to one side. The bun was toasted well and the mustard and onions delivered on those expected flavors but the pickle relish was almost non-existent. The predominant flavor of this burger was the cheese.
Side Note: The crinkle cut fries were seasoned well enough but didn’t get quite enough time in the fryer, lacking the light crispy exterior. Crinkle cut fries are supposed to highlight that characteristic over regular, straight cut fries so this was a missed opportunity.

With the beef so bland, the biggest flavor came from the cheese.
Costing me $10.95 for the combo meal, the Dog N Shake Double Cheeseburger with a bacon add scored just 44 out of 63 possible points, earning it 3 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. I was hoping for better from a local establishment, but in an honest assessment there was nothing special about this burger and sadly, it’s not a repeat buy.

Located at 1640 S Hillside St, Wichita, KS 67211, I hit the drive thru on this visit. The service was fast and friendly, I received my meal in less time than it took to listen to Photograph by Def Leppard on Classic Rock station 104.5, The Fox.
