I’m traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn’t matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I’ll have to sample them all in the name of “burger science” (cough).  For the burger criteria, click here.

Today for lunch I visited Dairy Queen.   Announcing a new line of what they call Signature Stackburgers in late March, Dairy Queen has five Stackburger options on their updated/revamped menu.  Offering what they say is big flavor and premium ingredients, each cheeseburger is made with 100-percent seasoned real beef, served on a soft and toasted bun with a wide array of toppings. Available as one-third pound doubles and one-half pound triples, I’m sampling what they call their classic bacon cheeseburger these days, the Bacon Two Cheese Deluxe Signature Stackburger.

The under the lid reveal

Here’s the description from the website:  The Bacon Two Cheese Deluxe 1/3 lb.* double Signature StackburgerTM features two 100% seasoned real beef patties, topped with perfectly melted Sharp American** and White Cheddar**, Applewood smoked bacon, tomato, onion, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, and mayo on a soft and toasted bun.

All that name and a supposed revamping of the menu for what is at best, an average burger?  The formerly frozen burger patties were seasoned well enough but over cooked. That’s typical in corporate fast food where in the name of food safety, bosses are OK with serving beef patties that are borderline hockey pucks.  The combination of the two cheeses is a nice touch, getting the creaminess of the American along with some sharpness from the Cheddar in one bite. There was good coverage with the bacon and it was crispy.  It’s kind of hard to screw that up because DQ bacon arrives at the restaurant pre-cooked and it’s heated up in the microwave during sandwich prep.  The moisture from the veggies helped offset the dryness of the beef, but the lettuce wasn’t the freshest.  The mayo also helped with the dryness factor and the bun could have used a longer toast.  And about that bun, it was dry and a bit tough on the exterior, as in, it was a day-or-two-old-and-somebody-left-the-bag-open, bun.

The mayo and moisture of the veggies were needed to offset the dryness of the beef patties

Side Note:  The fries at Dairy Queen have never wowed me, their kind of average.  But on this occasion they were a bit chewy, I’m thinking the oil in the fryer wasn’t as hot as it should have been.   And Braum’s makes a better strawberry shake.  The DQ shake has more tidbits of fruit in it, but the overall strawberry flavor is more robust with the Braum’s shake.

Costing me $9.12 for the combo meal which included less-than-stellar fries and a shake, the Dairy Queen Bacon Two Cheese Deluxe 1/3 lb.* double Signature StackburgerTM scored 50 points out of a possible 63, earning it 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars. Take off just two more points and it would be a 3 star burger.  It’s Bachelor on the Cheap wallet friendly, but it’s not the best burger choice out there, not even if just considering fast food options.

Signature Stackburger huh? I wouldn’t put my signature on it.  DQ needs to keep ‘revamping’

The Dairy Queen visited on this occasion is located at 1520 S Webb Rd, Wichita, KS 67207.  Hitting the drive through at about 11:15am, there were no customers ahead of me.  The service was fast, courteous and done with a smile.  I received my meal before Space Truckin’ by Deep Purple finished playing on Classic Rock station 104.5 The Fox.
