Mike Thayer

I’m traveling around the Wichita Metro, sampling the burger offerings from any joint that has burgers on the menu, local, regional, national chain, it doesn’t matter. In order to determine a true champion of burgers in the metro, I’ll have to sample them all in the name of “burger science” (cough).  For the burger criteria, click here.

For today’s Burger Challenge dinner, I went to Berneal’s Carryout.  This truly is a carryout only place, there’s a hand written sign on the door stating, “For Everyone’s Safety, Come to the Window” with an arrow pointing towards the service window.  They’re best known for their 99 cent cheeseburger.

Foil wrapped burgers and fries

Arriving at Berneal’s at around 4 pm, there was a customer ahead of me at the window.  If you’re not already familiar with this place, their burgers are really more of a slider size than they are a regular burger.

When it became my turn at the window, I went with two cheeseburgers with a bacon add, a side of french fries and a drink.  Costing me only $7, this is perhaps the best bang for the burger buck of the Challenge.

My brown bag of burger goodness was ready in about 15 minutes and I headed home to partake.  They wrap their burgers and fries in foil which keeps it all nice and warm during the short drive home, but also tends to soggy things up a bit and doesn’t do a whole lot for visual appeal.

The moisture created from the heat of the burger wrapped in foil kind of gives you a steamed bun thing, but then you lose the toast…

In taking that first bite of one of the sliders, I got nicely seasoned meat, a decent crust on the patty and crispy bacon.  I will say I was a bit surprised that the I didn’t get bacon in every bite considering it was a slider, but then again, I only paid like $2 each for them.  Adding to the flavor profile was the pickle, onion and American cheese along with the lightly toasted bun.  A bit on the dry side, I did add ketchup and mustard to the mix.

Side Note:  The fries I’m not a fan of.  In my humble opinion they’re over-fried and under-seasoned.  The fries are not a repeat buy.  I’ll try a different side next time.

The under the lid reveal. The meat to bun ratio is a bit off, especially for a slider, but again this is a cheap yet good eat.

The Berneal’s Carryout Cheeseburgers with bacon scored 49 out of 63 possible points, earning 4 out of 5 Bachelor on the Cheap stars.  If you have a slider craving they’ll satisfy it and for the money, they’re worthy of a repeat buy.

Berneal’s Carryout is located at 2409 E 13th St N, Wichita, KS 67214.  Remember, this is a carryout only joint, giving you the opportunity to doctor the sliders up when you get home if that’s where you’re headed.  Had I taken the time to put some lettuce, mayo and a slice of tomato on these, they would have been even tastier.

At around $2 each, these are repeat buys
