Because fashioned among the rustic tiles of grade-school gymnasiums, the promise of opportunity sprang up as self-proclaimed bakers sprawled their shrink-wrapped goodies across feeble card tables. And our ambitious optimism for rescuing a cause were dwarfed only by the assorted spread of handmade treats ready for bidding.
