Bachelor on the Cheap – I check prices so you don’t have to!
Problem: Small wooden gate that flaps open and shut in high winds
Solution: Secure gate with hook and eye, a latch would be overkill.
You would think that something so simple as a hook and eye would be reasonably priced wherever you shopped.
Nope.
I don’t need anything fancy, don’t want or need a hook made out of brass or something with a glossy black finish. Just a simple hook and eye for a simple job.
Check out the price gaps!

Hook and Eye 2-pack from Lowe’s
I only needed one hook and eye, but apparently, it’s a 2-pack minimum. All 2-pack prices listed were for zinc hook and eye sets. A 3″ hook and eye was determined best for the job, but a 2.5″ would have worked. Home Depot didn’t have a 3″ option but for the price of the 2.5″ it was cost prohibitive. I went with Lowe’s for the purchase, True Value was the next best price. Walmart didn’t have a 3″ option and look at the jump in price if a larger hook and eye is desired.
Ace is the closest to me for home repair and project needs, but I saved $3.51 by going to Lowe’s. Such a simple shop, but with a big price gap. It was worth the extra couple of miles for this errand. I already knew that Ace tends to run higher in price than Lowe’s for similar things, but that kind of gap for a hook and eye? Really Ace?
The markup for virtually the same product is eye-opening, especially for something so simple.
